Step-by-Step Skincare Routines: My Thoughts
We’ve all seen the skincare gurus who seem to spend their days dedicated to their 15 step skin care routines; meanwhile, I’m still trying to figure out how to make my clear hair last as long as possible. So, I decided it was time to investigate – is a step by step routine really necessary?
Yes! But to an extent. The most important thing to emphasize here is to listen to your skin. Your skin won’t need the same type of attention every day, and so listening to the days where it’s feeling too oily, too dry, and too sensitive is essential to getting that glow. There’s 3 pillars to your everyday regimen: cleanse, moisturize, and protect. Removing all signs of makeup before and during the cleansing stage is absolutely essential for the rest of the steps to be fully effective.
Our belief in the simplification of skincare is largely why the Ritual was born. In the Ritual you can find our Glow Activating Exfoliator, Balance Restoring Serum, Softening Hydra-Whip, and finally, our Eye Rejuvenating Elixir. You can even practice your skincare routine on vacation now, with our Discovery Ritual Set: a travel size version of your favorites! On days where you feel your skin needs that extra time, don’t be afraid to use our exfoliator as a mask, if you have the extra 5 minutes. And of course, on the more common days where the subway has taken a toll on your skin, scrub away the city by using it as a deep cleansing treatment. However, there is such a thing as over-exfoliation! Experts recommend exfoliating 2-3 times per week and making sure to focus on problem areas like the T-zone and other particularly oily areas. Of course, always remember to follow exfoliation with a moisturizer to replenish and hydrate your skin.
Hydration can come in many forms and figuring out what works for your skin is what can make or break your routine. Using a thicker moisturizer at night can work almost like an overnight treatment – think our Hydra-Whip combined with a couple extra drops of Rosehip Seed Oil. In the morning, before makeup, a substance which leaves a bit of a glossy hydrated look can be great to layer with makeup for a smoother, cleaner application. (Pro tip: the eye elixir works wonderfully to avoid creases in your concealer throughout the day!)
Lastly, we need to talk SPF. I know – using SPF has kind of popped up and out of the blue but it really IS as important as people claim it to be. All types of light that we are exposed to on a daily basis causes expedited aging (yikes)! Even on the days that its grey and the sun seems to have run away, that minimal gloomy light is still affecting our skin! So always remember your SPF between your moisturizer and makeup (or whatever your final look might be)!
