As one of the most recognized symbols of romance, luxury, and beauty for centuries, roses have a renowned reputation across the globe — and for good reason. The abundant benefits of rose can come in many forms such as a clay, water, oil, and more.
The champagne or honey-colored oil in particular is often called the “queen of all oils” or “liquid gold” because of what it can do for your skin, as well as the price it fetches. To understand why it’s so highly prized, we need to get a better understanding of what it is and how it’s produced.
Rose Oil can be primarily obtained in two ways. The first type of oil is called Rose Absolute, which uses solvent extraction and is commonly used for perfumes and scented products. The other form of Rose Oil is often referred to as Rose Otto and uses steam distillation of the rose petals to separate the wax and oils from the rose water and extract the different components by condensing them into several flasks.
At AAVRANI we only use the best ingredients in each of our products. That’s why the Rose Otto in our new Healing Rose Clay Mask is specially sourced from Bulgaria and due to its quality and healing properties is the most valuable oil in the world.
So why is Rose Oil (and specifically those from Bulgaria) so expensive and valuable? It starts with the collection and production of the oil itself, which is an incredibly labor-intensive and time-sensitive process.
Due to seasonality, harvesting of the roses can only be done from late May to early June and need to be handpicked in the morning while still dewy. This keeps the petals as intact as possible and avoids the oil in the rose petals evaporating or being drawn back into the stem as the day warms up.
The highest-quality roses come from the Rose Valley, south of the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria. These flowers are called Bulgarian Rosa Damascena and are the best roses for producing the precious oil because of the perfect soil and climate conditions in the area.
Beyond just collecting the roses, the steam distillation of this pale yellow oil is also a huge reason why it’s so expensive. Around 250,000 rose petals produce just 5 mL of pure rose oil, meaning that there’s a very limited supply of the liquid gold produced each year. Couple this with sourcing from the undisputed top rose oil producers on the planet and you can see why Bulgarian Rose Otto can cost more than solid gold.
Because of the nearly 300 vitamins, proteins, antioxidants, and other compounds in rose oil, it’s incredibly unique in its benefits and can’t be effectively reproduced in a lab. Its healing and soothing characteristics make it great for everyone, but particularly beneficial for those with sensitive and dry skin. As the leaves start to fall and it gets colder and dryer outside, Rose Oil is an indispensable part of your skin care routine.
One of the most notable uses of Rose Oil (as well as other rose components) is its soothing effect on redness and irritation. This makes it great for calming skin conditions like eczema or facial redness, and this isn’t just anecdotal — Rose Oil really is scientifically proven to reduce rosacea.
Another soothing property of rose oil that’s a blessing for those with dry or combination skin is how hydrating and rejuvenating it is. By keeping your skin moisturized and calm, Rose Oil also helps keep rosacea, eczema, and acne at bay without being harsh or abrasive like other products on the market. This improves your skin’s elasticity and keeps it soft and smooth.
Speaking of soft and smooth, Rose Oil’s vitamins minimize the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, and scarring. The anti-aging benefits of Rose Otto in combination with its soothing and gentle properties restore your skin’s natural glow and make it great for more mature skin as well.
While Rose Oils are gentle and soothing, they also have a long history of being used as an astringent and antibacterial treatment as well. It lifts and removes dirt and oil from your skin and balances your skin’s natural pH balance at the same time, which means that it can clear and heal acne even on the most sensitive skin.
Rose Oil isn’t abrasive or rough and actually encourages cell growth and skin renewal while it works. As a result, all of these benefits that can often be too harsh for sensitive, dry, or combination skin can be achieved without harming your skin. This oil’s gentleness gives it the versatility to not only be used on every skin type, but also to be a game changer for each.
We mentioned earlier that Rose Oil isn’t the only component of roses that has huge benefits for your skin. Two other ingredients in our Healing Rose Clay Mask are Rose Clay and Rose Water, both of which share similar nourishing properties to Rose Oil and are great for sensitive and dry skin.
Clays often are too harsh for sensitive skin types because they can strip the natural oils on your skin’s surface. Rose Clay doesn’t do this because it’s much more gentle and additionally removes dead skin cells, tightens your pores, reduces hyperpigmentation, and more.
Rose Water is the other primary ingredient that rose oil is separated from in the steam distillation process and is an amazing hydrating agent that preserves your skin’s moisture. It also has the same anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties as Rose Oil to prevent acne and redness.
From our founder, Rooshy:
“Growing up, my mom taught me how to use raw ingredients from our kitchen (like Turmeric, Almond Oil, Honey) to make our own beauty rituals. A few weeks ago, I shared a sample of the finalized Rose Clay Mask with her, and she loved it. This mask was inspired by those of you who suffer from rosacea, eczema, or simply have really, really sensitive skin – the formula gently detoxifies, nourishes, and evens skin tone.
For the final touch, we added pure Bulgarian Rose Oil to the mix – it's a natural antibacterial that disinfects breakouts, soothes irritation, and helps reduce rosacea. It's also the most valuable oil in the world – the distillation process requires 10,000 lbs of rose petals to make just 1 lb of this Rose Oil.”
See for yourself why Bulgarian Rose Otto is so valuable and sought after by trying our Healing Rose Clay Mask. It combines Rose Oil’s benefits with those of Rose Clay and Rose Water to draw out impurities and restore and soothe damaged skin.
Heal, brighten, and detoxify your skin today.
